Portugal experiences thousands of rural fires every year, particularly during the hot and dry summer months. Although the number of fires varies considerably from year to year, some years cause exceptionally large areas of land to burn. For example, by 04 October 2026, Portugal had recorded 8124 rural fires and approximately 74244 hectares of burned land, according to Portugal’s Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF).
