According to reports published after the storm, up to 8 million trees fell in the municipality of Leiria as a result of Storm Kristin, which struck during the night of 27–28 January 2026. Local authorities estimated that about 27% of all trees in the municipality were lost. The damage to forests in the wider Leiria district was described as unprecedented in modern times. The storm's strongest winds hit central Portugal, particularly the Leiria region, where vast areas of the famous pine forests were flattened, roads were blocked by fallen trees, and power infrastructure suffered severe damage. Some reports also estimate that more than 22 million trees fell across Portugal as a whole, with Leiria being the hardest-hit area.
